As a homeowner, you may not think about just how often you use your garage door until it fails to operate as it should. We’ll tell you about a few ways that you can troubleshoot common garage door issues and then get the professional repair service you’ll need.
Not opening or closing
If the problem that your garage door is causing is that it is having trouble either opening or closing, then you have a few different options as far as troubleshooting is concerned. The first thing to try is turning off the power to the opener and then trying to lift the door manually. If the door stays in place, then you’ll know that it hasn’t gone off-track. The problem may be a blown fuse instead. However, if your garage door has any electrical problems other than that, only a professional should tackle them.
Blocked sensors
One very common reason for the garage door to not function properly is something blocking the sensors. If the signal cannot reach the receptors, then the opener will be rendered useless. Check to make sure that there are no items stacked in the garage that could be interfering with the signals. Also check that there is no outside foliage, such as branches or flowers, that could be accidentally blocking the signal. Finally, check the antenna for cleanliness, as a dirty antenna can interfere with proper signal reception.
A broken spring
There are a number of springs that play an intricate part in the workings of a garage door. If any of these springs is broken, it will have an immediate negative effect on the functionality of the door. However, this is not something that a layperson should attempt to fix on their own. At the first sign of a broken spring, call in a licensed contractor so that they can repair the door quickly and safely.
Issues with the rollers
Another often overlooked part of the garage door system is the rollers. Since they are prone to aging, they can be among the first components to need replacing. The exact lifespan of rollers is determined in part by the material from which they are made.
Fixing rollers is another instance of letting the pros do what they do best. The main reason for this is that manually replacing parts of the garage door or its opener can lead to serious injury or even death if not done correctly. It is simply not worth the risk to try to replace a broken or worn part on your own.
